Our lumber and ‘one of a kind’ pieces will be of particular interest to those wishing to support ‘locally grown’ producers.
Welcome to Highwood Farm!
Highwood Farm, located in north Durham Region near Claremont, Ontario offers for sale: lumber, wood for artisans, firewood, kindling and offcuts using mainly ‘end of life’ trees reclaimed from the property as conditions permit and using a portable band sawmill onsite. We are a licensee of the province’s Ontario Wood program.
Our lumber and ‘one of a kind’ pieces will be of particular interest to those wishing to support ‘locally grown’ producers. Equally, our customers recognize the importance of supporting local farmers who demonstrate ecologically sustainable, forest management practices and who are located on environmentally sensitive landscapes such as the geologically important Oak Ridges Moraine.
The farm includes a woodlot of mature, mixed hardwoods and softwoods. Hardwood species principally include: White Ash, Basswood, Beech, Birch, Black Cherry, Poplar, Red Oak, and Sugar Maple. Softwoods include: Cedar, Hemlock, Red and White Pine, and Spruce.
Trees are harvested from the property that Mother Nature has determined have lived a full life or have had their lives ended prematurely due to such things as disease or wind throw. Some mature trees are also harvested where they present a danger or as part of appropriate forest management.
Lumber which is not used for farm purposes is available for purchase.
The rough cut lumber is of various dimensions and species and air dried. The lumber is likely to be of most interest to local woodworkers, artisans, farmers, contractors looking for special dimension lumber, nurseries, landscape companies and for many do-it-yourself projects.
Artisans and other woodworkers or perhaps gardeners looking for unusual natural garden accents may also find and source truly one of a kind wood pieces which were discovered thanks to the sawmill. Artistically speaking, the tree's inherent imperfections represent some of the most interesting and beautiful parts of the tree.
Firewood, kindling and offcuts are some of the other products generated by our forest management and sawmill activities. There is little waste from a harvested tree as a substantial amount of the slash is chipped and even the small amount of sawdust produced serves useful purposes on the farm.
Accordingly, our available supply is limited at any one time but we may be able to custom cut to order as the necessary logs become available.
Please note, customers will need to make their own delivery arrangements. Payment is either by cash or cheque.
We welcome your enquiries by email or phone. Visits to the farm are by appointment only.
